Kiki of Montparnasse

I've always been fascinated by old black and white photographs, especially those that captured Paris and its artistic world prior to WWII. Kiki (born Alice Prin) was one such character: a model, singer, actress, writer and painter, famous (or infamous depending on the censors) during the Jazz Age. Man Ray was an American artist and photographer who lived in Paris for years prior to WWII. Kiki began an affair with him and was his muse for most of the 20s. Below are pen and ink/watercolour pencil drawings of Kiki, based on one of Man Ray's iconic photographs of her.

On May 14, 2022, Le Violon d'Ingres, which depicts Prin's back overlaid with a violin's f-holes, sold for $12.4 million, setting a record as the most expensive photographs ever sold at auction
