Monica Holden-Lawrence

MHL was a writer who  lived at the Manhatten block on Robson and Thurlow. It was 1977 and her novel, 'Mad About the Crazy Lady' had just come out and was causing a stir in the lesbian community. The book chronicles the narrator's quest to find love and self-acceptance in a meandering journal format. The edition of 1500 copies was about 25 years ahead of its time and I'm pleased to claim I have a signed copy, obtained at a reading Holden-Lawrence did at the Western Front.
She was gracious enough to let me take some portraits of her in her apartment.

It wasn't the best photo shoot because I was nervous, which made her nervous so the poses aren't particularly relaxed. At right is her reading from Mad About the Crazy Lady at the Western Front.
