Xtra West
Some of you may remember Xtra West, a bi-weekly gay newspaper, published by Pink Triangle Press. Xtra was founded in 1993 and within two years had overtaken Angles, which was the local community magazine of the LGBT community. Xtra West became Vancouver's largest and most widely read publication targeting the gay and lesbian community. At its peak, the publication had a circulation of 20,000 copies reaching an estimated 32,000 readers. The publication's final print edition was published on February 12, 2015.
Sometime in the mid 90s I was approached to do an illustration to go with an article on hidden relationships between women in the 40s. The art director rejected this one because the triangle pointed up. I was accustomed to taking art direction, but his manner was so dismissive and petty we never got along.
Oil pastel, ink, acrylic and collage.
