The Bus - Sarajevo Olympic Games

The 1984 Winter Olympics ran smoothly, giving no indication of the tragic war that would engulf the city eight years later. The podium was located on the site of the Igman Jumps and later, during the siege of Sarajevo, it was used as a place of executions. In my Faithful Reader's words:

"Rumour had it the Serbs, who controlled the area around Sarajevo during the war, would put Croats or whoever they didn't like on the podium and shoot them.  That's why the masonry is so shot up.  We had been up exploring the area because we had heard the war damage was so bad and it was.  I keep using this word I know but it was just sobering.  Like any joy you felt was gone.  That you were standing where someone had once stood, terrified and taking their last breaths, was so disturbing.  The whole city and country were like that.  The echoes of tragedy, on all sides, were there. No good guys. "
