Nuclear Dog
I submitted this little cartoon to Herizons magazine in late 1985. Founded in 1979 as a volunteer feminist newspaper, The Manitoba Women's Newspaper, Herizons switched to a magazine format in 1983. It then expanded into the national Canadian market in 1985. Herizons published monthly until 1987, then ceased publishing until 1992, when its doors were re-opened by two former staff. The non-profit quarterly reports on the progress women are making to achieve equality, break down barriers and improve the lives of women and girls around the world. Herizons is Canada's answer to Ms. magazine. You can find it at https://www.herizons.ca/
I was paid the princely sum of $40 for this cartoon; it was the first time I ever got paid to draw something outside of my day job. I cashed the cheque and asked to have part of it paid out in one dollar bills, one of which I framed: "My First Published Buck". I have that framed dollar to this day. Included is the cover of the issue in which Nuclear Dog appeared.
