Church of the Holy Pragmatist
As she got older, Mom became a terrifying cook. She'd pair something nice like pork tenderloin with . . . tater tots. Or make strange substitutions to recipes if she was missing an ingredient. Her favourite topping on casseroles was Special K cereal. The casseroles might be left out, warm, on the stove overnight or put in the fridge inside a plastic container where they would grow fur well into the following month. She'd get mightily offended if you suggested perhaps salmonella might be a possibility ("I've been cooking for 70 years!") But we never got sick and neither did she.

And this is my mom, age 94, a year before she died. I miss your funny cooking, mom.
