Jocie

Circa 1975. Jocie was my best friend during the years I worked as a bartender in Saskatoon. We both worked in the "Owl's Roost" cocktail lounge at the Travelodge; after I left for the coast and school I still came back to work there in the summers.  The Roost was a hilarious example of lounges at the time: lots of black naugahyde and purple cushions. Baby Duck was the latest craze, along with Galliano liqueur [remember "Harvey Wallbangers"?] and the most popular mixed drink was rye and ginger. Hey –  it was the prairies, that's what you drank. Or beer. Calgary beer, which you called "Cal", or Black Label or Pilsner.

Jocie was shy and really hated having her picture taken which made it hard to get a good portrait of her without being a pain in the ass. There was a pensive Joni Mitchell-like quality about her, but she also loved a good laugh. (she's at the right next to one of the restaurant waitresses in the bottom shot) I've tried to find Jocie on the internet but there is not a trace. I hope she's had a good life.
